13 Essential steps for creating a Revit Template
My Support Cases.Creating a revit template is a big undertaking, so ensure you have enough time to really commit to creating it. Keep in mind that creating a good Revit template now will save you so much time in the long run! So lets begin! The point of your Revit template is to save time and be consistent.
With that in mind, think of all the things you use consistently on every project and go from there. Make sure you add your cover page and titleblock to your template file.
But not only that, create drawing sheets you always have e. Create it and add it to the sheets. These have been set-up and organised in my template so as I model, my schedules update on the fly.
Views and View Templates — This is a big one. Take the time to create some really good view templates which you can use for a number of situations. I have a Floor plan template with my ideal view range, scale and detail level already set-up.
I have steelwork templates, concrete templates, stair plan and section templates…. Limit the amount of variables and make it clear which style should be used for each situation. Tags — Load all of your company specific tags into your template. Set-up the default tags so users can just go ahead and automatically use the correct one. A good tip is to name them as their function not what they look like e. Object Styles — Go over the object styles and ensure things look right.
Best to get it right in the template then changing it in every project. Detail components — Load or create your typical detail components.
Phases — This is another one that often gets overlooked, but if you work with a lot of Existing structures then this is vitally important. Make sure your Phase filters and Graphic overrides are set to how you want them so that everything looks correct. These include Walls, Floors, ceilings and roofs. This is a good chance to set-up your most common types and follow a naming convention. I choose to load most — if not all of the types within these families.
There is a theory that you should be prudent with the amount of families you load into your template to avoid large file sizes. While that makes sense, I feel its more worthwhile to load all of your most common families so you can save time having to load them in each project. In my opinion its much more beneficial from a time perspective, and I have never had a really slow model due to too many families loaded in the template.
These are the main things I have included in my own revit template. Hopefully it has helped you to create or improve on your own.
Google Plus. General Revit Tips. What to include in a Revit template The point of your Revit template is to save time and be consistent. If you found this post helpful, please feel free to share it. Tweet Share Pin it Comment. Founder of revitIQ.Most people struggle a little bit with Revit templates. What should they have in them? What should they not have in them? Should they include most of your firms Revit content? What if your firm designs single family residential AND commercial projects?
Should you have one template for each practice group? These are the type questions we will answer. Check out this video as well as below screen shots as we talk about how to make Revit templates rock at your firm. There are essentially to ways to create a Revit template.
Start with a project file. The nice thing about this workflow is you may already have your sheets set up, view templates, and your view browser dialed in. The downside is there will be a fair amount of clean up removing all elements of your project file leaving it an empty for the next project to start from. If the file has work sharing enabled and a central file created, you will have to begin by detaching it from central.
This process essentially disables worksharing and allows you to save-as a Revit template. Save-As Template. Please note this feature would not be available if you did not complete the above "Detach and discard worksets".
Configure Revit Template Options. Once you have created your template you will want to configure your office's machines to look at the Revit template. You will do this by going to all the user's machines in the office and setting it in options. You can remove the other templates that are not necessary by hitting the "-" symbol.Creating a great template in Revit is challenging.
Where do you even start? With years or refinement and experimentations, we found the best standards and features to use. When creating your template, you have the option to start from scratch or to use the Revit out-of-the-box template as a starting point. Starting from scratch is way too much work for no reason, so your best bet is to use the Default Revit template.
Architectural template is probably your best option, although the Construction template has a few interesting pre-made schedules for quantities.
A third option is to buy a quality template from a third party source. Whatever option you choose, you'll have some work to do to adapt the template to your office standards. The first step is to rename all default elements with a prefix specific to your business. Why go through this long process?
When you are done, it will be much more simple to distinguish your standards elements from the foreign elements. Every time a user download a random family from the internet, it will be obvious since the name will be different. That will give you more control over what is going on inside your projects.
In the example below, we use the RP prefix for all elements. That makes it obvious when an "alien" element is added to the model. You should apply this trick not only to the loadable families but also the system families walls, roofs, dimensions, lines, regions, materials, etc. In addition to using a custom office prefix for all elements, you should also establish an abbreviation system for elements in a certain category.
Templates and family files not installed or missing in Revit
For example, consider naming all roofs using R1, R2, R There is two benefits from such a technique: it keeps your model organized and it allows you to easily spot foreign families and elements.
Go to the Manage tab. Then, click Additional Settings and pick Line Weight. By default, the thickness of the lines is different depending on the scale. For example, line 1 will be 0. While some users might like this feature, simplicity is always better. You should make it so the line thickness is always the same regardless of the scale. Also, you should beef up the thickness a little bit. The default lines are probably a little too thin.
Below is the line weight we recommend. That's what is used in the RP template. There needs to be more of them. The lines should be organized in a better way. Here is an example from the Revit Pure template below:.
We use the thickness number as well as the thickness itself in the line name.Having difficulty creating presentation quality drawings in Revit? This template is your solution. The Saved Path information for point cloud files in the Manage Links dialog is relative to this root path location. If you change this root path, you may need to reload any point cloud files that are already linked in Revit projects.
Note: To improve performance and reduce network traffic, the recommended workflow for worksharing is for each user to copy the point cloud files locally. As long as the relative path to the local copies of the point cloud files is the same for each user, the link will remain valid when you synchronize with central. In some cases, it may be easiest to store point cloud files in the root directory.
